The contribution deals with the topic of implementation and protection of human rights in the Slovak Republic. Since the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993, the principles of basic human rights and freedoms have been applied in the Constitution of the Slovak Republic. The contribution is focused on the legislative and institutional framework of the human rights agenda in Slovakia. The effort is to open a discussion about priorities and roles in the field of human rights after almost 20 years of membership of the Slovak Republic in the European Union. It selects the main problems that are applied in the field of human rights protection and how they are legislatively set after almost 30 years of independent SR. The basic goal of the contribution is to clarify what causes led to the emergence of problems in human rights compliance. The contribution also opens a discussion about the attitudes of citizens towards the protection of human rights with a connection to the functioning of minorities and special communities. Methodologically, the contribution is based on the data of various researches, which were carried out mainly during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and immediately after it. It mainly concerns the years 2020 to 2022. The article shows how the principles of human rights protection are applied in Slovakia and what practical problems can arise in their observance in a relatively young democratic country in Central Europe.
