Brexit: The View from Russia

Brexit seems to be a strategic miscalculation of the British political establishment. The UK now faces a long period of uncertainty in geopolitics, geoeconomics and even in its internal political cohesion. For the EU Brexit is also an obvious loss but it should not become the beginning of its end. If lessons are learned, the EU might be able to modernize itself and to cease looking upon the surrounding world as a territory for cultivation. Brexit should lead to a certain awaking for the political establishment in the EU. A spin-off from this process may become understanding that a new edition of a Cold War with Russia is a dangerous project, which runs against national interests of all sides.
Le Brexit semble être une erreur de calcul stratégique de l’establishment politique britannique. Le Royaume-Uni est à présent confronté à une longue période d’incertitude en matière géopolitique, géoéconomique et même pour sa cohésion politique interne. Pour l’UE, le Brexit est aussi une perte manifeste, mais ce ne devrait pas être le début de sa fin. Si des enseignements en sont tirés, l’UE devrait être en mesure de se moderniser et de cesser de regarder le monde qui l’entoure comme un territoire à cultiver. Le Brexit devrait mener à un certain réveil de l’establishment politique de l’UE. L’une des retombées de ce processus pourrait être de comprendre qu’une nouvelle édition de la Guerre froide avec la Russie est un projet dangereux, qui va à l’encontre des intérêts nationaux de toutes les parties.
