The Institute for the Mediterranean of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) organized in 2017 a series of events at the Plaka premises of the EPLO, the workings of which are reflected in this volume of the Mediterranean Agenda.
The thematics of these events, either lectures or Roundtable discussions, concerns two central topics, which deal with the political aspects of the inter-state relations in the geographical area of Europe and the Mediterranean, on the one hand, and with the cultural aspects of the recent developments, on the other hand.
Within the framework of the first topic, a Roundtable Discussion on the general theme “International Treaties and Politics in the Eastern Mediterranean (The Treaty of Lausanne and Other Agreements)” took place on February 8, 2017. The Roundtable Discussion was addressed by Professor Spyridon Flogaitis, Director of the European Public Law Organization, and was introduced by Ambassador a.h. Sotirios Varouxakis, Director of the Institute for the Mediterranean. Ambassadors, Professors, Journalists and other specialists in the field attended.
On March 17, 2017 a Roundtable Discussion on the central theme “Europe and the Mediterranean - Contemporary Challenges” was organized. It was also addressed by Professor Spyridon Flogaitis while Ambassadors, Members of the European Parliament, Professors and Journalists participated.
On May 9, 2017 a Discussion in English was organized with the participation of representatives from the USA Embassy in Athens and Professors from the US and Greece. The theme was “World War I and the Increased US Role in World Politics”.
On November 14, 2017 H.E. the Ambassador of the USA to the Hellenic Republic gave a lecture, followed by discussion, on the theme “US - Greek Relations”.
Within the framework of the second topic, a Roundtable Discussion was held on May 30, 2017, on the theme “Dialogue of Civilizations and Interculturalism”, with the participation of Professors and of political personalities.
The interventions and the discussion focused subsequently on the following themes: “Dialogue of Civilizations in the Euro-Mediterranean Context”, “Multiculturalism and Pluralism: Identifications, Risks and Misunderstandings”, “Education and Civilization: The Role of the EU in the Integration of Immigrants and Refugees”, “Interculturalism - The Big Challenge of Education”.
