In the period hereby examined, Prime Minister Enrico Letta resigned following the decision of his party (Democratic Party) to change the cabinet in order to renew the experience of the government of broad alliances and ensure the implementation of institutional reforms. Therefore, the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, appointed the new leader of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, whose cabinet is supported in Parliament by parties belonging both to the center-left and to the center-right. In addition, the new Prime Minister promoted a political agreement with the leader of the main opposition party, Silvio Berlusconi, for approving some reforms, including the electoral and constitutional ones. At the end of the year, President Napolitano, after a year and a half since the beginning of the second mandate, announced its intention to resign.
